Low risk, high reward? Robert Allen Dickey, R.A if you please, makes his Mets’ debut against the Nationals tonight in Washington. He was 4-2 with a 2.23 earned run average at Buffalo. The free agent as signed for $600,000. How bad could the 35-year-old knuckleballer be compared to the person he is replacing (Oliver Perez, $12 million)?

Dickey has a career record of 22-28 and a 5.43 ERA. That is close to serviceable nowadays. He spent most of his big league career with Texas and has been used as a starter and reliever. Dickey’s biggest achievement this season was retiring 27 straight batters after yielding a leadoff hit in a minor league game.

He will be opposed by Livan Hernandez, a former Met who was considered finished last season. Everyone says Hernandez can be hit, yet he is 4-2 with a 1.46 ERA.
