Reasons to be excited, cautious about the Mets in 2017

REASONS TO BE EXCITED
Rotation
The starters not only are deep and talented but still could be getting better, which is scary. On talent alone, the Mets could start an ace on most nights. Few teams can match that firepower.
Power
The Mets hit 218 home runs last season, establishing a club record despite a roster that was crushed by injuries.
Veterans
Experience matters. When things go wrong, as injuries pile up, what comes next can be shaped by the response in the clubhouse. The Mets have assembled a group of seasoned pros.
REASONS TO BE CAUTIOUS
Health
The most accurate predictor of future health issues: past health issues. In that regard, the Mets must hold their collective breath that they can avoid a repeat of last year’s injury wave.
Catching
The Mets stuck with Travis d’Arnaud, and he must find his form at the plate, iron out his throwing issues and stay healthy. If not, the Mets are vulnerable at a critical spot on the field.
Defense
Bats over gloves — this has been the Sandy Alderson way. It’s fine when the Mets hit. It’s back-breaking when they don’t.
