Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is more than 1,700 hits behind his counterpart across town, but he has one thing in common with Derek Jeter -- Reyes wants to play the moment he is ready to come off the disabled list. General manager Sandy Alderson said Reyes might not be activated when he is eligible Monday, but the top hitter in the National League said his hamstring is feeling good.

Reyes ran well the past three days and said he plans to run hard in a straight line Saturday before the Mets game against the Phillies. On Sunday, Reyes will try running hard around the bases, and if he passes that test, he'll consider himself ready.

"It's two weeks already, and I've been feeling very good," Reyes said Friday. "I've been doing a lot of treatment for the injury. I'm feeling good, and I try to go on the field as soon as possible because I want to be on the field.''

Because he has been taking batting practice, Reyes was uncertain about whether he would need any minor league at-bats to get up to speed. As for whether he might take a cautious approach to guard against injury before heading into free agency after this season, Reyes said: "I'm just worrying about getting on the field as soon as possible. So I don't think about my contract situation. I want to get on the field to help my team win.''

Izzy the closer, at times

Terry Collins named Jason Isringhausen as his designated closer before Friday night's series opener, but that doesn't mean the manager won't give Bobby Parnell and Pedro Beato a chance to try that role. "I've got to be careful with Izzy,'' Collins said. "I don't think he's a three-days-in-a-row guy.''

Wright begins rehab

David Wright went 1-for-2 Friday with a double, a run scored, one walk and a strikeout in his first rehab game for Class A St. Lucie. He played five innings at third base and did not have a fielding chance.
