Jose Reyes looked healthy and energetic during stretching exercises and batting practice and said that he felt well after doing pregame running Saturday. He said after the game that he feels good and is looking forward to running the bases Sunday.
Terry Collins said it will take a meeting between the Mets baseball and medical staffs before a decision is made about when Reyes can return to the team, but that seems imminent. Collins also said it is likely that David Wright, who is doing rehab in Florida, likely will meet the Mets when they travel to play the Marlins next weekend.
Parnell getting closer
Bobby Parnell took a step toward being a closer, even though he came into the game in the eighth with a nine-run lead.
Collins had planned on having Parnell enter when it was 7-2 and the heart of the Phillies order was coming up, just to have him get a feel for an important situation.
"I always think there's a time in the game when you've got to shut the other team down. They had just scored two runs, they've got three, four, five [hitters] coming up. If you want to be a closer in the big leagues, you've got to get those three guys out," Collins said. "As I've always felt, when you take the field and you've got a uniform on, someone's watching. This game has to be shut down right now. We scored the extra runs, but I still felt the same way."
Medal of Honor recipient
The Citi Field crowd gave a standing ovation to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Leroy Petry, recipient of the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama earlier in the week. Petry, a Mets fan, saved the lives of two fellow soldiers by handling and disposing of a live grenade in Afghanistan three years ago. On behalf of the Mets, Reyes presented him a flag that had flown over Citi Field.
