Jose Reyes was removed from Saturday's game against the Yankees in the third inning for what the Mets described as "tightness" in his left hamstring. The team also said the decision was made as a "precaution" after he felt something from running out an infield single in the first inning.
Reyes led off the game with a slow roller to Yankees' second baseman Robinson Cano, who unsuccessfully tried to swipe the ball to first with the back of his glove. One out later, Reyes attempted to steal second on a called third strike to Carlos Beltran, but retreated back to first instead.
Reyes returned to the field for the top of the second inning, and easily turned a double play on a flip from Justin Turner. But in the third, Ruben Tejada trotted out to shortstop, and the Mets made the announcement shortly afterward.
Despite a history of leg injuries, Reyes has stayed healthy this season, playing in 79 of the team's 81 games. The two he missed were to due to his time on the bereavement list after the death of his grandmother last month in the Dominican Republic. Reyes entered Saturday batting .352 with 15 triples, 30 stolen bases and a .397 on-base percentage.
