Santana an automatic for Mets
Tonight's starter, Johan Santana, is the best 8-5 pitcher in baseball.
Santana is red hot over his last five starts, going 3-0 with a 0.71 earned run average. Opposing batters have a .199 average. He has also gone at least seven innings in each of those outings. His overall ERA is 2.79.
Santana is 2-0 lifetime vs. St. Louis but Albert Pujols has reached him for two home runs and is batting .500 against the lefthander.
The Mets, who had no trouble handling ace Adam Wainwright on Tuesday, get to face another top Cardinals' pitcher in Jaime Garcia (9-4, 2.21).
