PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets added a new wrinkle to Johan Santana's rehab schedule Sunday by sending up Justin Turner and Omar Quintanilla to stand alongside the plate in his closest game simulation to date.
Both hitters served only as props to give Santana a better read of the strike zone, and with pitching coach Dan Warthen calling balls and strikes, the two-time Cy Young Award winner made some more incremental progress toward his scheduled March 6 start against the Cardinals.
Santana threw a total of 72 pitches, 31 of them under what Warthen considered game conditions in two simulated innings. He took two five-minute breaks between the sessions and suffered no ill effects, throwing fastballs, changeups and sliders.
"Details make the difference," Santana said. "That's what you're there for. You have to make your adjustments so you can tell when something goes wrong -- a pitch, or where you're landing. You want to recognize that right away so you can make that adjustment."
Warthen, who stood behind him, gave instructions to Santana, such as "stand tall; fastball on his hands." More often than not, Santana's pitches appeared to be on target, and he was animated during the session.
"I can tell when I throw a good pitch," Santana said. "I always try to keep everyone entertained, to keep everybody loose, especially myself. I felt really good out there."
Next up for Santana is long toss, followed by live batting practice later in the week. So far, so good.
"There was that continued fluidity," said manager Terry Collins, who also watched Santana Sunday. "It didn't look like he was getting fatigued. As long as he continues to grow, as long as his health is being maintained, it's a good day."
Extra bases
Jenrry Mejia again threw 15 pitches in the bullpen for the second time this week, but to a catcher standing a few feet in front of the plate. Warthen said Mejia will take the mound either Tuesday or Wednesday for a regular session with the catcher at the normal distance . . . With everyone present and accounted for, the Mets will have their first full-squad workout Monday. Collins plans to address the team beforehand . . . The No. 8 patch to honor Gary Carter will be worn on the uniform's right sleeve. The Mets' 50th anniversary patch is on the left.
