Strawberry belts three homers

Darryl Strawberry launched three home runs at Wrigley Field, leading the Mets to a 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Batting fifth in the order, Strawberry hit a two-run blast in the first and solo shots in the third and seventh innings. The first two were off Derek Botelho and he cranked his 15th of the season off lefty Ron Meridith. In what was his first career three-homer game, the slugger went 4-for-4 with five RBIs, four runs and an intentional walk in the fifth inning. Strawberry, 23, went deep in the following game and finished the season with 29 homers. He had a second three-homer game on Aug. 6, 1996 as a Yankee, accomplishing the feat against the Chicago White Sox.
