Mets outlast Astros and

head to World Series

It was Game 6 of the National League Championship Series at the Astrodome with 45,718 fans hoping to see their team even the series and force a seventh game. The Mets would emerge after 4 hours and 42 minutes of drama with a 7-6 win over the Houston Astros in 16 innings to advance to the World Series. The Astros scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Bob Ojeda and Bob Knepper shut the Mets out on two hits for the first eight innings. Lurking to pitch Game 7 for the Astros was Mike Scott, who had already won two games in dominant form in the series, allowing just one run on eight hits with 19 strikeouts. The Mets scored three times in the ninth to tie the game. Rick Aguilera and Roger McDowell combined for eight innings of scoreless relief. In the 14th, Wally Backman singled in a run only to see the Astros tie it on Billy Hatcher's homer off Jesse Orosco. In the 16th, the Mets scored three times to take a 7-4 lead. The Astros scored twice in the bottom of the 16th before Orosco finally ended the game by striking out Kevin Bass on a 3-and-2 pitch with runners on first and second.
