Mets move into first for first time
The Mets moved into first place for the first time in franchise history, after sweeping a doubleheader against Montreal at Shea, 3-2 in 12 innings and 7-1. The Mets finished the day with a six-game winning streak, which would reach 10 games before ending. Nolan Ryan pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and four walks in the second game after Jim McAndrew pitched 11 of the 12 innings in the opener and allowed four hits. Ken Boswell singled in the winning run in the opener and was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI in the second game. The Mets took a one-game lead over Chicago in the NL East.
