Vail extends hitting streak to 23 games
Mike Vail tied the National League rookie record by hitting in his 23rd consecutive game in the Mets' 3-2 win over the Montreal Expos at Shea Stadium. Vail had a pair of run-scoring singles; the second came in the eighth and broke a 2-2 tie. The late-season call-up's streak matched the 1948 freshman performances of Richie Ashburn (1948, Phillies) and Alvin Dark (1948, Braves).
