We'll never know who would've played third in 10th
It was unintentional, but Jerry Manuel channeled his inner Abbott and Costello when asked who would have played third base had the Mets tied the score in the ninth inning yesterday.
"I don't know," he said.
He didn't have to figure that one out after the Mets lost, 6-5, but had they gone to extra innings, they were out of position players. They were mostly out of relief pitchers, too.
So with David Wright having been ejected in the ninth, who would have been at third?
Jason Bay said he was a third baseman at Gonzaga. "But that's why I'm an outfielder now," he said. Bay would have been the likeliest choice, but then a starting pitcher would have had to play leftfield in the swirling wind at Citi Field.
Ike Davis offered a bemused look when asked what the Mets would have done.
"Man, I didn't even think about that," the rookie said. "That would have been fun."
