With Manuel suspended, Jauss manages the Mets

As expected, Jerry Manuel had the same coaches on his staff when the Mets returned to Citi Field to face the Cardinals last night. What was not expected was that one of those coaches - Dave Jauss - managed the game.
Manuel was informed about two hours before first pitch that he had been suspended one game for his actions during an argument with umpire Doug Eddings on Friday in Los Angeles. Since managers cannot appeal, Manuel served his penalty last night.
Manuel was ejected for arguing an out call at first base on a play on which Luis Castillo appeared safe. He was apparently suspended because the bill of his cap made contact with Eddings' cap during the argument.
Manuel, who called the suspension "harsh," was upset after he was told of the decision.
"I'm always surprised that the other voice is not heard in the argument," he said. "You have no forum to present your side or your case."
At least Manuel didn't have to spend the day breaking in any new coaches. The Mets decided to stand pat after their 2-9 road trip.
Hitting coach Howard Johnson has been on a particularly hot seat since the Mets' offense has been in a super funk. Manuel said he was pleased none of his coaches were fired and said the buck for the team's performance should stop with him, not them.
"I think if anything, you talk about coaches or things like that, I think they have done a tremendous job, all of them," he said. "I think when you go through these things, I think you have to look here. You have to look at the manager. I don't think it's fair to put other people out there. I think you have to look at the manager. That's part of the job. It's part of being in New York."
The Mets held organizational meetings Monday. The result? No changes. At least not yet.
"We've had discussions with the front office, the hierarchy," Manuel said. "They're as displeased and frustrated with where we are . . . and not very happy about what's going on . . . We all have different responsibilities, but wins and losses, those are my responsibility."
Notes & quotes: Hisanori Takahashi has had his start pushed back to Saturday so the Mets' top four starters can stay in rotation. Takahashi was available out of the bullpen.
