The Mets said righthander Zack Wheeler "played catch" on Monday as he threw a baseball for the first time since having Tommy John surgery in March. The session took place at the Mets' spring training facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Wheeler reportedly made 60 throws. In a text to Newsday, he said the planned throwing session "definitely went well" and that he felt "strong and good" afterward. He added that the session was "pain-free."

Wheeler is not expected back in the Mets' rotation until June or July of next season. He was 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA last season and is 18-16 with a 3.50 ERA in two big- league seasons.
