Joe Girardi was hoping to wrap up the division early so he could give Mark Teixeira some rest. Teixeira has been playing with a broken toe and bruised thumb.

Maybe Girardi should reconsider. Teixeira isn't doing himself or the Yankees any good right now. Or this month. He has four hits in his last 36 at-bats and is 12-for-68 (.176) in September with no home runs and six runs batted in. He struck out with runners on first and second in the fifth inning of Thursday's loss to the Rays.

To generate some offense, the Yankees could play Lance Berkman at first and DH Marcus Thames or Jorge Posada (when he isn't catching).

It seems a better option at the moment.
