Pettitte threw 35 pitches off a bullpen mound, the second time he's done so in the past three days. Pettitte, recovering from a fractured left fibula, said he couldn't put a percentage on precisely how much he pushed off his left ankle, but he appeared to be very encouraged after chatting with pitching coach Larry Rothschild and bullpen coach Mike Harkey.

"It was a good pen . . . I felt really good," Pettitte said. "I felt like my command was really good. And Larry and Harkey said they thought I looked great. I feel good. So again we'll report back in with Doc and our trainers and see what the next step is.

"I know that we were talking if this went good, that we were going to try to do maybe a batting practice as quick as possible just to get some hitters in there. I don't know when that will be. But it was good. Today was another good day."

"He is making a lot of progress now," he said. "The fact that he's on the mound and he's comfortable and he's recovering fine tells me he's on the path to getting back."

"I think I'm over the hump," Pettitte said. "I know the doctor was still, 'Let's don't get crazy.' Until he clears me to tell me not to worry about it, I'm still going to have somewhat of a level of concern. And he hasn't quite given me that OK yet."

The Yankees announced a donation of $25,000 to the Red Cross for hurricane relief.
