By now, you know that Yankee rightfielder Marcus Thames fueled the Red Sox ninth inning rally Tuesday night by fumbling Marco Scutaro’s pop fly. Manager Joe Girardi didn’t have much choice but to take it in stride.

What do you think Billy Martin would have done? Let’s reference a seminal game in Fenway against the Red Sox in 1977.

Jim Rice hit a shallow ball to right that dropped in when Reggie Jackson lumbered  after it. Martin pulled Jackson from the field (for Paul Blair), claiming Jackson hadn’t hustled to make the catch. The game was on national television and a captivated viewing audience saw Martin and Jackson nearly come to blows in the dugout over the incident.

Jackson has always maintained he went all out for the ball. No one is blaming Thames for not trying, but Martin likely would have railed over the error.
