This will be the Yankees' first spring training since 1972 without The Boss, but longtime owner George Steinbrenner still will create a headline or two.

A life-size bronze statue of Steinbrenner, erected Jan. 7, will be formally dedicated Feb. 26 before the Yankees' spring training opener against the Phillies.

The 6-foot statue, mounted on a 3-foot granite base and located at the entrance of Steinbrenner Field, has Steinbrenner in a suit and wearing a 2009 World Series championship ring. The 600-pound statue is identical to the one in the lobby of Yankee Stadium.

"We miss him, no doubt about it," general manager Brian Cashman said Friday.

The Yankees won seven World Series under Steinbrenner's watch, but a plaque on the statue base cites some of his achievements beyond his record with the Yankees, such as his tenure as vice president of the U.S. Olympic Committee and his position on the board of the NCAA Foundation Board of Trustees.

According to the Tampa Tribune, it reads in part: "A great philanthropist whose charitable efforts were mostly performed without fanfare, he followed a personal motto of the greatest form of charity is anonymity."

Tthe Yankees recognized Steinbrenner's legacy during a pregame ceremony last September, unveiling a monument, larger than all the rest, in Monument Park.
