A.J. Burnett (9-10, 5.20) called his outing Tuesday, overshadowed by Mariano Rivera's 600th save, "a big step."

How much of one, however, cannot be determined.

The righthander produced a quality start, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings. In striking out a season-best 11, he picked up just his second victory since June 29. Likely a few more of those will be needed to even be considered for a playoff start, but things have been unquestionably been better of late.

"I was more aggressive," he said. "It was confidence and pitching with conviction."
