A noticeably slimmer CC Sabathia has credited his offseason weight loss in part to giving up Cap'n Crunch. But the makers of the sugary corn and oat cereal insisted Tuesday the Yankees ace didn't have to go that far.

A day after Sabathia said he "could eat a box at a time" before his diet, a spokeswoman for Quaker Foods & Snacks suggested the Yankees' hefty lefty probably would have been better served eating the cereal in moderation.

In an e-mail to Newsday, the spokeswoman said: "It's no surprise that CC found Cap'n Crunch so appealing - it's one of the most popular brands in America. But with most things in life, moderation is key, and we certainly recommend maintaining a balanced diet."

After reporting for his first day of spring training on Monday, the 6-7 Sabathia told reporters he had lost about 25 pounds, bringing his weight down to about 290 pounds. Saying he worked with a nutritionist and a chef, Sabathia started the diet after surgery last October to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
