CC gets his 20th; Guthrie gets his 10th (in a matter of speaking)
And, not surprisingly, wasn't all that excited about it.
“It feels good but I’m more excited that we won the game and people will stop asking me about now,” Sabathia said with a smile. “Every game is so important for us. I didn’t think about it at all in Tampa, didn’t think about it at all tonight. I was just trying to go out and make good pitches and help us try and get a win.”
Pressed on the accomplisment, Sabathia said: “Maybe after the season I can sit back and enjoy it more but right now I’m just looking five days ahead.”
No one else was low-keying Sabathia's achievement.
“I’m really happy for him,” Joe Girardi said. “He has been our ace all year, really since he’s gotten here. To get to 20 wins is quite an accomplishment. There’s only a few pitchers that do it every year.”
Sabathia became the first to do it in the Majors this year. Last year no pitchers reached 20 victories.
"I didn't know this was his first time until after the game," Derek Jeter said. "I just assumed that he had done it before. You feel good for him. Winning 20 games is not something that's easily done. A lot of things have to go right. You have to pitch well, the team has to score runs, and if you have a lead, you have to hold the lead. So I'm excited for him."
*** Jeter was hit by Jeremy Guthrie in the first inning, becoming the 10th Yankee since July 2008 Guthrie has hit.
“It’s too many," said Girardi, who didn't go as far as to say he felt the HBP were intentional. "I know he likes to pitch inside but it’s too many.”
Jeter called Guthrie “effectively wild,” but didn't see intent behind the pitches.
“I don’t think they’ve been on purpose,” he said. “I don’t know why he would.”
And with that, back tomorrow afternoon for Andy Pettitte's big day as he'll be opposed by Chris Tillman (1-4, 6.32).
