Chris Martin traded to Yankees for cash

The Yankees acquired bullpen depth, picking up 6-8 righthander Chris Martin from the Colorado Rockies for cash, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.
Martin, 28, had no record and a 6.89 ERA in the first 16 appearances of his big-league career last season. He struck out 14 in 15 2/3 innings and is said to have a power arm.
Martin has minor-league options left, so he could end up at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre if he doesn't make the Yankees out of spring training. Martin was designated for assignment by the Rockies on Jan. 5.
The Yankees are looking at a back of the bullpen with righthanders Dellin Betances and David Carpenter and lefthanders Andrew Miller and Justin Wilson. Adam Warren could return to a setup role if he doesn't win a starting spot in spring training. The other spots will be up for grabs from a group that includes righthanders Esmil Rogers, Bryan Mitchell, Chase Whitley and lefthander Chasen Shreve.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated righthander Gonzalez Germen for assignment.
