Concerns over Nun-EEEEE?

TORONTO -- Joe Girardi refused to bury Bartolo Colon after the righty’s wretched two-thirds of an inning Thursday night and he also excused Eduardo Nunez too.

The Yankees manager highlighted the infielder’s lack of minor-league experience on artificial turf as a defense for Nunez’s misplay on a J.P. Arencibia’s chopper to third, which allowed an additional five runs to score in an eight-run first inning for the Blue Jays.

Nunez, who will be Alex Rodriguez’s fulltime fill-in over the next four to six weeks, admitted his confidence waned earlier in the season when he made “like six errors in two games with [A.J.] Burnett in Detroit and CC [Sabathia] at home.” But now, he feels great, he said, and is looking to use Rodriguez’s absence as a chance to show he belongs in the Majors – and on the Yankees.

“I feel ready,” said Nunez, who has a team-high 11 errors. “I have my confidence back. Making errors is part of the game, you know? If you’re not making errors, you’re not playing.”

The infielder also dropped a fly ball off the bat of Adam Lind in the second inning, but Nunez -- who was Derek Jeter's stand-in while the Captain was on the disabled list earlier this month -- was not charged with an error. Asked if he’s feeling any pressure to replace Rodriguez, Nunez said: “No, no, no. I feel it’s another opportunity to show I can play third base too. I’ll be fine. I feel good. Just keep working.”
