Congress honors late Yankees announcer Sheppard

Congress is honoring the late Yankee Stadium public-address announcer Bob Sheppard.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) introduced the resolution Tuesday in tribute to his lifetime achievement. It was passed by the House of Representatives.

Sheppard, who lived in McCarthy's district in Baldwin, died in July at 99. He started as the Yankees' PA announcer in 1951 and worked his last game in 2007. He also served as the stadium voice of the NFL's Giants from 1956-2005.

McCarthy praised Sheppard's majestic tone and noted how he introduced more than 70 Hall of Famers during his career.

McCarthy thanked 52 co-sponsors of the resolution, saying they included members who rooted for other teams.- AP
