Centerfielder Curtis Granderson is having a big September with eight home runs, 21 runs batted in and a .289 average. For the season, he's at .251 with 24 homers and 65 RBIs.

Granderson turned out to be a bargain at $5.5 million. That changes when he earns $8.25 million next season and $10 million in 2012.

Perhaps the Yankees go after Rays' leftfielder Carl Crawford, a likely free agent, who is far more dynamic in stealing bases and has a higher batting average.

The Yankees would then move speedy Brett Gardner into centerfield. Crawford will cost plenty, but maybe the Yankees have seen the best of Granderson.

There is no better time to trade a player than when he is hot.

And no bigger mistake than assuming he will stay that way and not.
