Derek Jeter hits walk-off single in final home game live coverage
With great emotion, Derek Jeter trotted out to shortstop to start the ninth inning.
He had already driven in two runs, doubled off the wall in left-centerfield and scored a run.
Only anticipation remained. Would Jeter take infield warmups then come off the field in his final game at Yankee Stadium so the fans could salute him? Or, would he play the entire inning and end the game the way he had so many others -- at shortstop in the Bronx after another win by the Yankees?
He stayed. For all three outs. And after David Robertson gave up three runs on two homers to allow Baltimore to tie the score at 5, there now was the bottom of the ninth.
Jose Pirela singled off Evan Meek. Antoan Richardson pinch-ran and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Gardner.
In steps Captain Clutch. Jeter singled to right field and drove in Richardson with the game winning run as the Yankees beat the Orioles, 6-5, on Thursday night.
