Do as he says...and full squad workout notes
Derek Jeter could write a book on how to be a New York sports celebrity -- or just a celebrity, period -- in terms of carrying himself and, more specifically, saying the right things.
Joba Chamberlain said he hopes younger players take notice of how the shortstop answers questions on a daily basis.
“I think they should,” Chamberlain said. “I don’t know if they necessarily do but I think they should.”
He added: “He came up around this, he came up being the guy and he just had to learn quick. He just takes his time. He thinks about what he’s going to say and understands that anything can be thrown his way and he’s prepared for it.”
*** Curtis Granderson, who appears as affable as they come, walked around the clubhouse shaking a lot of hands Wednesday morning.
“It’s exciting,” Granderson said. “Kind of like the first day of school.”
Granderson said he paid close attention to Joe Girardi’s address to the full team, which took place before Wednesday’s workout.
“The big thing he mentioned, which I can attest to being on the other side, is the bulls eye’s always on the Yankees’ back,” Granderson said. “No matter how good or bad they are or what they did the previous year, everybody wants to beat New York.”
*** Brett Gardner, expected to start in either left or center when the season starts, isn’t guaranteed anything, Girardi said. The Yankees would like to see Gardner, who worked extensively on his bunting over the winter, improve on his .345 OBP from last year.
“You have to prove yourself,” Girardi said. “Obviously there are some jobs where we know some people are going to be, but Gardy still has to go out and win the job and play at a high level.”
*** Granderson, before taking his first round of BP, spent some time around the batting cage chatting with Yogi Berra.
“Hopefully the first of many conversations with him,” Granderson said.
*** Brian Cashman on not addressing Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera’s contracts this offseason.
“I didn’t have time and I don’t apologize for it,” Cashman said. “I think the policy works and ownership without a doubt agrees with that. There will be a time and place for discussions on people who mean a great deal to us and I think we demonstrated that in terms of previous years commitments. And we look forward to having very private discussions at a more appropriate time. Not a year in advance is all.”
On Thursday, it will be Alex Rodriguez’s turn to address the media, promises to be a much quieter affair than it was a year ago.
“Probably a lot different,” Girardi said.
