The Yankees placed Dustin Ackley on the 15-day disabled list with a right lumbar strain, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Caleb Cotham, a righthanded pitcher, was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Ackley, an infielder and outfielder, was acquired last Thursday in a trade with the Seattle Mariners. Ackley appeared in two games last week in Chicago against the White Sox and went a combined 0-for-3.
Ackley is batting .212 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in 87 games this season.
Cotham has pitched in one game this season, which was last Wednesday in Texas against the Rangers. He went 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and no runs with four strikeouts.
