Brett Gardner said before Wednesday night’s game against the Twins that he was grateful he had gotten over the stomach bug that knocked him out on Saturday. But not long after that, he took batting practice and noticed that his elbow would not stop hurting.

By the end of the night, he was on the disabled list because of the bone bruise and elbow strain he sustained while making a catch Tuesday.

“He couldn’t get loose,’’ Joe Girardi said, adding that the team sent him for an MRI, which revealed the problems.

“That’s unfortunate, he’s a huge part of our team,” said Raul Ibañez, who will help fill in for Gardner in left field. He will share the position with Andruw Jones and possibly Eduardo Nuñez, Girardi said.
