Pitcher Manny Banuelos, 19, signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2008 and currently the top-rated lefty in the organization, had a good first full season in professional ball last year, going 9-5 with a 2.67 ERA for low-Class A Charleston. His development suffered a setback when he missed the first month of this season because of an appendectomy, but his recovery seems to have been swift. Banuelos, a Futures Game participant in 2009, is 0-1 with a 1.16 ERA in five starts and 231/3 innings with Class A Tampa. On Wednesday night, he allowed three unearned runs in five innings in taking the loss. The 5-10, 155-pound Banuelos, who throws a fastball, curveball and changeup, isn't known as a power pitcher, but he did strike out 104 in 108 innings last year and has 33 strikeouts this season. He has very good control for a pitcher his age.
