Yankees' Frankie Montas to be shut down 10 days after cortisone injection in right shoulder

Frankie Montas will be shut down for about 10 days after receiving a cortisone injection on Monday in his troublesome right shoulder, the Yankees pitcher said on Tuesday.
Montas, who is 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in eight starts with the Yankees, has been a major disappointment since he was acquired from Oakland along with reliever Lou Trivino for four prospects on Aug. 1.
Montas was diagnosed with shoulder inflammation, which sidelined him in July when he was with Oakland. The Yankees made the trade anyway.
“It’s the same thing that I was dealing with in Oakland,” Montas said.
The Yankees placed Montas on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Sept. 17. The regular season ends on Oct. 5, so time is short for Montas to impact the Yankees in 2022.
Montas said he had a cortisone shot with Oakland when the injury first occurred and that he might have “rushed it” to get back on the mound.
“I still want to get back and try and help the team in the playoffs, whatever I can,” Montas said.
Domingo German will rejoin the rotation and start on Saturday vs. Boston.
The Yankees had hoped Montas would slot into their playoff rotation as a No. 2 behind Gerrit Cole. But at least they still have a shot of that person being Luis Severino, who will be activated from the 60-day IL to start against the Pirates on Wednesday.
Severino was angry when the Yankees moved him from the 15-day IL to the 60. He has been out since July 14 with what the team calls a “low grade right lat strain.”
Severino, who is 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 16 starts, said he expects to throw about 65 pitches on Wednesday and thinks he can build up enough before the playoffs begin.
“I was resting for 60 days,” he said. “Of course I’m fresh now.”
