Over the weekend, free-agent pitcher Freddy Garcia expressed a desire to pitch for the Yankees. He got his wish last night, agreeing to a minor-league deal with the team, a source confirmed to Newsday.
Garcia, 35, who went 12-6 with a 4.64 ERA in 157 innings with the White Sox last season, will compete for a spot in the back end of the Yankees' rotation. Bartolo Colon, 37, whom the Yankees signed last week, also will battle for a spot.
Garcia will earn $1.5 million if he makes the Yankees, according to espn.com, with the possibility of making $3.6 million in incentives.
Garcia told the Venezuelan paper Lider en Deportes that although he enjoyed his time in Chicago, he had a preferred 2011 destination in mind.
"A team like New York [the Yankees] would be ideal," he said, "and would match up with this stage of my career.''
