He’s back, baby!

The Yankees on Thursday will hold their third annual Seinfeld-themed giveaway as the first 18,000 fans to enter the stadium for the game against Houston will receive a George Costanza calzone bobblehead.

It’s one of the hottest days on the Yankees’ promotional calendar. Expect a sellout crowd, fans lining up hours and hours before the gates open, and immediate bartering going on inside the stadium as collectors offer to buy the bobbleheads on the spot for big bucks.

As of Monday, the bobblehead was already listed on eBay as a “presale” item for as much as $150.

Costanza, played by Jason Alexander on the hit sitcom, was for a time employed as the mythical assistant to the traveling secretary for the Yankees.

“The Calzone” was a Season 7 episode in which the show’s over-the-top version of George Steinbrenner became obsessed with a calzone Costanza was eating and had to have one delivered to him for lunch every day.

In 2024, the Yankees gave out a bobblehead with Costanza swinging a bat. Last year featured Costanza taking a nap under his desk. All three are nods to classic episodes from the “show about nothing” that ended its NBC run in 1998 but has been ubiquitous in reruns ever since.

The Yankees have had seven sellouts this season. Three have been because of bobblehead giveaways (Max Fried Star Wars Mandalorian, Aaron Judge MVP, Hello Kitty). The others were the home opener, Father’s Day and games against the Red Sox and Dodgers.

Series star Jerry Seinfeld, who grew up in Massapequa, is a die-hard Mets fan. But his show featured the Yankees during their dynastic run in the 1990s. Seinfeld himself is apparently a fan of the Costanza bobbleheads.

“I definitely get a call each year asking if I can send some bobbleheads to Jerry,” said Debbie Tymon, the Yankees’ senior vice president of marketing. “I got a call earlier in the season this year when it appeared on the promotion schedule saying, ‘I'm reaching out early. Jerry would like a couple of bobbleheads.’ ”

The Costanza bobbleheads have to go through a rigorous production schedule that can take four to five months from concept to manufacturing to ending up in a fan’s hands, according to Craig Cartmell, the Yankees’ senior associate director of marketing, promotions, stadium events and broadcast marketing. Alexander is involved in the process.

“We come up with the idea on our end,” Cartmell said, “and then we work with the vendor, and the vendor goes to Warner Brothers to get their approval. Part of that process is Warner Brothers reaches out to Jason Alexander to make sure he's fine with it. They make sure he's OK with the likeness.”

There have been tweaks along the way. One was with the jacket Costanza was wearing in the calzone episode. Another had to do with the character’s hairline.

“In this case, I had to go back to them and be like, ‘The varsity jacket, that's not what was in the episode,’ ” Cartmell said. “ ‘You have to fix the NY.’ I can't say if there was much changed to Jason’s face this time. I know the first time, he did have feedback and they wanted the hairline fixed and a couple other minor things that he and his people told them to fix.”

The fixes were made, the bobbleheads were distributed and exactly 18,000 fans presumably went home happy.

Rest assured, the bobbleheads that were sent to Seinfeld and other VIPs did not come out of the 18,000 total that are earmarked for fans.

“We guarantee distribution of 18,000 units at the gates,” Tymon said. “But we always increase the order a little bit for our in-house needs. We definitely get requests from the clubhouse. Not just the Yankee clubhouse — the visiting team as well.”

Since the Costanza bobbleheads are so popular, would the Yankees ever consider giving away more than one a season?

“No,” Tymon said. “I think that's what makes it so unique. One per year, I think, is perfect.”
