Girardi: someone's got to catch it

By far the most discussed topic after tonight's game was Francisco Cervelli's second-inning error that contributed to three unearned runs.

Adrian Beltre led off the inning with a double. J.D. Drew popped to second, and when Mike Lowell sent a high but fairly routine pop-up between the mound and the plate, Javier Vazquez looked well on his way to getting out of the inning. Vazquez, near the first-base line, was in position to make the catch, but at the last moment, Cervelli tried to make a basket catch. The ball dropped to the grass and, as Cervelli put his head down in disappointment, Beltre went to third.

Cervelli called off Vazquez (9-8, 4.63), who said, regardless, he should have just made the catch. 

"For me, it was an easy play," Vazquez said. "I should have caught it...After he dropped it I said, 'Man, I should have called that ball' because it was an easy play for me."

Cervelli said he was adhering to an old baseball adage.
