Joe Girardi said Phil Hughes will be skipped in the rotation in an effort to limit his innings heading into the postseason.
Hughes (17-8, 4.31 ERA) – who has pitched 169 and 1/3 innings thus far -- was scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Red Sox, but will be skipped in favor of Dustin Moseley. Hughes will pitch Wednesday in Toronto.
Girardi hinted more changes are on the horizon for the Yankees’ rotation. “As they hopefully take place, we’ll give them to you,” the manager said.
When asked if Hughes would also be available to pitch out of the bullpen, Girardi replied: “Right now, Wednesday would probably be it.”
Tonight’s starter Andy Pettite and CC Sabathia likely will have their starts pushed back as well so they’re both on regular rest heading into the postseason.
