Hitless in Detroit

Well, not quite that bad but, as Joe Girardi said after today's 6-0 loss, “We just didn’t swing the bats very well in Detroit."

Wednesday it was Rick Porcello shutting the Yankees down in a 2-0 loss and today it was Justin Verlander, who has overcome a rough start to his regular season. Today he held the Yankees to four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

“He’s not a guy that you really look forward to facing when a team his hot offensively, let alone when you really haven’t been swinging the bats too well,” Jeter said of Verlander.

Meanwhile, CC Sabathia lost for the fourth time in his last five outings at Comerica Park and didn't pitch well at all, allowing a season-worst six runs. He also gave up nine hits, including two homers for the second straight game.  

"He [Verlander] was throwing well today so I just tried to keep it where it was at but I wasn't able to do that," Sabathia said. "He pitched a great game today and definitely deserved to win." 

Sabathia said he felt "pretty good" mechanically.

"I just hung a couple balls," Sabathia said. "When my pitches were right they were swinging early in the count, getting ground balls, so it's just one of those days today where I kind of lost it."

The Yankees are looking forward to getting back home -- seems like they've been on the road since reporting for spring training in February -- and getting their bats going. It's a rough week upcoming with the Twins this weekend, followed my "mini" series against the Red Sox and Rays and then a trip next weekend to Citi Field to play the Mets.

"Hopefully get back to winning series back at home," Girardi said. "We're playing a very tough Minnesota team that's playing extremely well. They swing the bats, they pitch, they don't make mistakes. But I am really looking forward to going home."
