Phil Hughes' back has improved, Joe Girardi said before Tuesday night's game, but the righthander is still not a lock to start the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rays.

"He's better," Girardi said. "But I can't tell you that he's 100 percent yet.''

CC Sabathia is scheduled to start the second game.

Hughes, originally scheduled to start Monday, experienced back spasms after his bullpen session Friday in Toronto. Girardi did not give a contingency plan if Hughes couldn't go.

"That's something we'll have to talk about," Girardi said. "And part of that could depend on what happens today."

Hughes was not available before the game to speak to the media.
