Pitchers are creatures of habit, Dave Eiland said. But that's not going to stop the Yankees' pitching coach and manager Joe Girardi from again skipping Phil Hughes in the rotation.

Hughes was scheduled to start Sunday against the Red Sox, but now he'll pitch Wednesday in Toronto, Girardi said Friday. Dustin Moseley will take his spot in the rotation and face Daisuke Matsuzaka on Sunday.

"Obviously, it's not the best situation when a guy gets skipped,'' Eiland said, "because sometimes they're on a roll and feeling good about themselves and throwing the ball good. But you've got to protect their health, and that's what this is all about."

When asked if Hughes (17-8, 4.31 ERA) also will be available to pitch out of the bullpen, Girardi replied: "Right now, Wednesday would probably be it."

That means Hughes, who has pitched 1691/3 innings, will have anywhere from seven to 10 days' rest before his first postseason start. Both American League Division Series begin Wednesday, Oct. 6, and continue Oct. 7, 9, 10 and 12, if necessary. Hughes could start Game 2, 3 or 4.

Girardi also hinted that more changes are on the horizon for the rotation, but he didn't disclose any details. According to a published report, CC Sabathia - who pitched Thursday night - will not start again until Friday night in Boston so he can pitch on regular rest in ALDS Game 1.

Extra bases

David Robertson (back) threw a bullpen session Friday and it "went real well," general manager Brian Cashman said. "When things come up, you have to back off and give it the necessary time," he said. "Hopefully, that's what happened here. We did the MRI. It was fine. It was clean. Now it's just how do you feel? And if it feels good we'll try it, and so far, so good.'' . . . Jets tight ends Dustin Keller and Ben Hartsock watched batting practice before the game . . . With his 22nd home run Friday night, Curtis Granderson has hit 12 in his last 39 games.
