Jesus Montero disappointed scouts, too

Asked for the biggest disappointment he saw, of any player on any team, during the Grapefruit League, an opposing team’s scout didn’t search long.

“The guy you saw every day” he said, meaning Jesus Montero. “I kept waiting for him to show something. I never saw what everyone’s talking about.”

The scout made clear he wasn’t calling the Yankees’ top prospect, still only 21, a bust; explaining he was more disappointed that, after Francisco Cervelli got hurt in early March, Montero didn’t raise his level of play.

The Yankees, though they didn’t say it, were similarly disappointed and sent Montero, who regressed defensively after showing some improvement early in spring, to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, which opened the season Thursday night, to start the season and play every day.

Joe Girardi and others in the organization felt Montero might have pressed after Cervelli’s injury and, indeed, after hearing he didn’t make the team, the catcher homered in his first minor league spring game.
