Derek Jeter was a late scratch Saturday because of a bruised right heel. The injury occurred Friday when Jeter ran to first, though Joe Girardi wasn't sure on which play.

"His heel's sore," Girardi said after yesterday's game. "We'll see how he is tomorrow. I'm hoping that we can put him back in the lineup."

Jeter, who went 1-for-5 Friday, received treatment and was not available to reporters before or after the game. Ramiro Peña replaced Jeter at short and went 1-for-4.

Jeter was in the original lineup posted at about 9:30 a.m., but a little more than an hour before the start of the game, a new lineup was posted, this time without him.

Girardi said Jeter, famously loath to disclose any kind of injury, received treatment on the heel after Friday's game. Girardi was informed of the injury by trainers Saturday morning. "I just thought it was in our best interest to sit him for a day," Girardi said.

A.J. likely to make start

A.J. Burnett suffered a bruised fifth metatarsal on his right foot Wednesday when he was hit with a ground ball. He woke up sore Thursday and skipped his scheduled bullpen turn Friday, casting doubt on his start Monday night in Phoenix. But Burnett threw his bullpen session Saturday without pain. "I'll be good to go for Monday," he said. "Nothing hurt. I'm fine."

Progress for Aceves

Alfredo Aceves (strained lower back), threw off a half-mound yesterday, the first time he's thrown on anything other than flat ground since going on the disabled list May 12. "It feels really great," he said. The next step is for him to throw off the full mound, but he said that timetable hadn't been determined.

Extra bases

Jorge Posada started at catcher, meaning he's unlikely to do so again today. Girardi said Friday that his inclination is to avoid catching Posada in consecutive games . . . Girardi had Alex Rodriguez at DH because he wanted to be "conservative" with him in a day game after a night game. He hopes to play him in the field . . . A-Rod and Robinson Cano weren't the only players with whom recording artist Lady Gaga - whose postgame presence caused a bit of a stir in the clubhouse Friday - requested an audience. She also asked to see Posada, Joba Chamberlain, Nick Swisher and, of course, Jeter.
