Will an endorsement from Joe Morgan help Robinson Cano's chances to be named most valuable player in the American League?

Morgan made several references to Cano being his pick during last night's ESPN telecast of the Yankees-Red Sox game.

Morgan, a Hall of Fame second baseman with the Reds, won two straight MVP awards.

Cano is certainly in the conversation as the voters get set  to cast their ballots by Sunday, the conclusion of the regular season.

Cano is batting .318 with 28 homers and 105 RBIs. His competition comes from Detroit's Miguel Cabrera (.328, 38, 126) and Texas' Josh Hamilton (.361, 31, 97). Hamilton has missed  the last several weeks with fractured ribs.

Cabrera will lose some votes because he did not play on a contender. Hamilton may  be docked for missing time with his injury. That could allow Cano to come away with the award.
