Just how close was Mike Lowell to becoming a Yankee?
The trade deadline came and went, and the Yankees added Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns. Those were the two big moves. Nothing crazy.
But, it appears as if the Yankees were close -- very close -- to adding another big name to the Kearns-Berkman duo.
That player: Boston Red Sox veteran Mike Lowell.
Here is how the trade would have broken down -- as reported by FOX Sports -- and here is a take on just how close Lowell was to becoming a Yankee.
-It was discussed Friday morning.
-It would have been a three team trade, including the Rangers.
-The Red Sox would not trade Lowell directly to the Yankees.
-Lowell would have primarily served as a right handed DH
-He could have backed up Rodriguez at first and Teixera at third
No word yet as to why the deal ultimately didn't go through. Remeber, Lowell was a one time budding prospect within the Yankee farm system. But once he left he become a dereaded Yankee opponent, first, with the Florida Marlins and of course with the Boston Red Sox.
Lowell was put on the disabled list on June 24 and is currently 11-22 in a rehab assignment with 4 home runs. Terry Francona was going to activate him Saturday, but chose not to.
