The Yankees did not have a great day against the Blue Jays, but relief pitcher Justin Wilson did.

With Masahiro Tanaka removed after six innings, Adam Warren got in trouble in the seventh, allowing a single by Jose Bautista, walking Dioner Navarro and hitting Chris Colabello to load the bases with none out.

Wilson then struck out Justin Smoak and Cliff Pennington and got Kevin Pillar on a flyout to keep the Yankees within 2-0. "I was glad to get out of that situation," he said. "It was a tough series for us. Any spark helps."

Wilson picked up Warren and thought the offense might pick up, too. Said Wilson, "Our offense is too good not to score runs."

Spot starter needed

After a day off Monday, the Yankees enter a stretch of 16 straight games, and Joe Girardi said a spot starter likely will be needed. "Exactly where we do it and which day, I can't tell you," he said.

The extra starter probably is on the current roster. "I would think that's where he would have to come from," he said. "I'm not sure, as far as having an inkling of what's going to happen in the future, so I always concentrate on the guys in the room." The likely candidates are Warren and Bryan Mitchell.

Ryan's lips are sealed

Brendan Ryan is the last Yankee participating in the largely abandoned mustache movement started earlier this season. "You lose a game or two and it completely peters out," he said of his teammates. "It's a prop. You know what fuels it is everyone is telling me to shave it. That's kind of what makes me want to keep it way, way more."

Ryan said he would consider shaving the 'stache for charity. "If I raised a hundred bucks, I think that would be pretty good," he joked. Ryan said his wife wants it removed by the end of the season. "Hopefully,'' he said, "after the World Series."
