Lance Berkman takes nasty fall

With Nelson Cruz on second after a one-out double, Ian Kinsler popped a foul ball toward the first-base seats.

Berkman went after the ball and as he tried to stop, his spikes slide right across the dirt. Berkman, who looked like he was on skates, fell hard on his back and appeared to hit the back of his head. The first thing you think about is a concussion with the way the back of his head hit the ground. He stayed down for a bit as Joe Girardi and the training staff went out to him.

But Berkman is OK. He went back to first base. In fact, on the final out of the top of the fourth inning, Jeff Francoeur grounded to Derek Jeter. Jeter's throw was wide and pulled Berkman off the bag. But he kept his foot on the bag.

After losing Mark Teixeira to a strained hamstring on Tuesday night, the Yankees can't afford to lose Berkman.

UPDATE: Craig Sager of TBS reports that Berkman told Girardi he got the wind knocked out of him and couldn't breathe.

UPDATE NO. 2: Looks like Berkman has changed his cleats. Clearly, that first pair didn't give him the proper traction.
