Lineup options if Posada is sidelined
Jorge Posada's health--he is day to day after suffering concussion-like symptoms when a foul ball hit his mask Tuesday--might create some lineup issues for the immediate future.
How much catching would Francisco Cervelli do? Most of it. Backup Chad Moeller will fill in the gaps. Triple-A prospect Jesus Montero might have gotten some time, but the 20-year-old is out with a leg infection.
What to do with Posada? Assuming he can bat, Posada could be the designated hitter against righthanders, where he has a .255 average with eight home runs. He has a better average (.274) against lefties, but Marcus Thames needs to be the DH against those pitchers.
What to do with Lance Berkman? Assuming Posada can at least DH, make Berkman a pinch-hitter or keep him on the bench. In 20 games with the Yankees, he is hitting .263 with four runs batted in. He was supposed to be the everyday DH, but that opportunity is gone through injury and inability.
What about Thames? He continues to be the DH against lefties, where he is hitting .327. If Posada can't DH, Thames has held his own against righties, batting .278 with seven of his 11 homers. But Girardi would probably opt for Berkman against righthanders.
