Russell Martin has had a painful two weeks.
It started May 28 in Seattle when he fouled a ball off his left foot, aggravating a toe that had been hit earlier in the season.
Wednesday night the catcher sat, his back having "locked up" after Tuesday night's game, Joe Girardi said.
Martin said the soreness occurred Tuesday night when he was going through a workout.
"I bent over and felt some discomfort so I stopped," Martin said after Wednesday night's game. "It hasn't been feeling right."
Girardi said he hoped to have Martin for Thursday's series finale against the Red Sox but wasn't sure.
Neither was Martin.
"I've never had something like this happen," he said. "We'll see how I feel tomorrow. If I'm not getting any better, we'll have some tests on it I'm sure."
Roster doings
With Joba Chamberlain being placed on the DL and Hector Noesi being unavailable after he threw six innings Tuesday, the Yankees made two roster moves.
Righthander Amauri Sanit was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for a second stint. Also, Jeffrey Marquez, a former Yankee prospect who was part of the 2008 deal for Nick Swisher and designated for assignment last week by the White Sox, also was called up. The righthander was claimed Wednesday and arrived in the clubhouse at 5:50 p.m.
Noesi, 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in four games, was sent down, which was difficult for Girardi. "We're not going to be able to use him for four days and you're in a long stretch," he said.
Extra bases
Jorge Posada, who spent Wednesday with his family because his 11-year-old son, Jorge Jr. underwent a surgical procedure, is expected to rejoin the team Thursday . . . The Red Sox were forced to play backup catcher Jason Varitek after Jarrod Saltalamacchia was hospitalized with severe vomiting.
