Russell Martin missed a second straight game with a sore back, though he felt much better yesterday than he did Wednesday. Still, the Yankees felt it necessary to have the catcher undergo an MRI yesterday morning. The result came back, Joe Girardi said, “clean.”

“It didn’t feel great waking up but as I got through the day, and I got a lot of treatment done, it just felt better,” Martin said.

Martin tweaked his back Tuesday night during a postgame workout, doing dead lifts.

“I knew that how it happened it wasn’t going to be anything major,” Martin said. “It wasn’t a violent movement or anything so I knew it was something small. I would have been really surprised if it had been something bad.”

Francisco Cervelli started last night. Martin said he wasn’t sure on his status for tonight’s game against the Indians.

“Right now I’m just going to take it day to day and see what happens,” Martin said. “I really don’t know. Maybe I wake up tomorrow and I feel great. If I feel great tomorrow I don’t see why I couldn’t play.”
