CLEVELAND -- Neither Mariano Rivera nor the Yankees want to take any chances.

So, after the closer went through his normal pregame routine Tuesday -- short toss and long toss and some running in the outfield -- the decision was made to hold out Rivera a second straight game because of soreness in his right triceps.

"I felt it a little bit," Rivera said. "I could pitch . . . But if we can get by another day, it would be much better."

Rivera, who first felt the discomfort after suffering his fourth blown save of the season Sunday against the Mets, said the muscle felt "better than yesterday [Monday]."

Rivera, who has 21 saves and a 1.91 ERA and was just picked for his 12th All-Star Game -- though he's all but certain not to go -- said "hopefully maybe tomorrow" of when he thinks he could be ready.

Rivera, 41, reiterated what he said Monday -- there's no worry on his part. No tests have been done and none are planned.

"I'm not concerned at all," Rivera said. "As I said before, it's going to happen and it's going to go away. After treatment and rest, we'll be fine."

He was available in case of an emergency Tuesday night, though it was hard to imagine a circumstance in which Joe Girardi would use him.

"Like I said, I could pitch now," Rivera said. "But I don't want to take a chance."

Jeter's pursuit on HBO

HBO is working on a documentary about Derek Jeter's pursuit of his 3,000th career hit, the network announced Tuesday. MLB Productions has been following Jeter, who agreed to let their cameras trail him at home and during his recent rehab from the calf injury that put him on the disabled list. Jeter wore a wireless microphone during BP. Extra bases

RHP pitcher Phil Hughes (right shoulder inflammation) will make his first start since April 14 Wednesday night. Girardi said he plans on Hughes throwing about 100 pitches . . . Girardi said Eric Chavez (left foot fracture), on the DL since May 6, suffered another setback in his rehab, this time feeling pain in his abdominal region. Chavez, who had some back pain last week, which has since gone away, was to return to New York from Tampa to be seen by doctors . . . RHP Rafael Soriano (right elbow inflammation) is scheduled to throw a bullpen Wednesday and is, Girardi said, "on the right track."
