Many had been wondering when Bad A.J. would make his first appearance of 2010 and it came in tonight's 6-3 loss to the Phillies.

Burnett, who has lost his last three starts, allowed six runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings, his shortest outing of the year.

"He just couldn't locate," Joe Girardi said.

That was also the case with one out in the fourth when Burnett didn't cover first on Chase Utley’s grounder that Mark Teixeira stopped behind the bag.

The first baseman had no one to throw to and ate the ball. Girardi said that wasn't the reason he removed Burnett, who called the moment a "lapse."

“It’s uncalled for, there’s no excuses for it,” Burnett said.

Burnett, booed loudly as he left the mound, said Girardi's message was positive.

“He grabbed the ball, he grabbed me and said, hey, we’re going to fix this,” Burnett said. “Just keep your head up.”

Girardi almost always protects his players in public and said he there was no need to rip into Burnett, either on the mound or in private.

“One thing about this game when you’ve played it a long time is most players know when they’ve screwed up,” Girardi said. “So you don’t necessarily need to go out there and hammer them.”

Conventional wisdom was the Yankees would be able to do that to Jamie Moyer but instead the 47-year-old became the oldest pitcher to ever beat them.

"I don't know about other people I know I'm amazed at what he can do,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

“It’s not like it’s an uncomfortable at-bat,” Jeter said of facing a pitcher who rarely gets over 80 mph with any pitch. “You know what he’s going to do. I guess it probably gets a little frustrating when you know what guy’s going to do and he still gets you out. You know he’s going to nibble, you know he’s going to mix up speeds. It’s not like you’re surprised by anything he does but, like I said, he’s a great pitcher. That’s the best way to put it. He knows what he’s doing.”

The Yankees will try to take two of three tomorrow night as Andy Pettitte (8-1, 2.46) takes on Kyle Kendrick (3-2, 4.80)
