Nick Johnson to miss 4-6 weeks
As expected, Nick Johnson will undergo surgery on his right wrist.
The designated hitter, on the disabled list since May 8 with an inflamed tendon in the wrist, said before Monday night’s game the cortisone shot he received hadn’t made the impact he hoped.
“I've had shots in it before and last year I had no problems with it all year,” Johnson said. “So I thought the shot would do what it did last time. It was just stagnant. Didn't get worse or better."
Johnson is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.
“It’s going to be a while,” manager Joe Girardi said.
Johnson has played more than 100 games four times in his career and he’s now assured of once again falling short of that number. Girardi, however, is confident the designated hitter will return at some point.
“I believe that we’re going to get him back,” Girardi said.
Johnson said that again having to miss significant time in a season was “frustrating,” but he was looking ahead, not behind.
“Just get it fixed and be able to swing pain-free,” he said. “Go from there."
Girardi said his plan for now is to rotate the DH spot in the lineup. Monday night Alex Rodriguez was the DH while Derek Jeter was the DH Sunday.
“You can’t anticipate that maybe you’ll find another part of maybe something comes along,” Girardi said. “I know that parts that we have today. This is what we have.”
